Waterfalls

The world’s largest waterfall is called Angel Falls and is located in Venezuela. It is the world’s tallest uninterrupted waterfall, with a height of 979 metres, and a plunge of 807 mt. The waterfall drops over
the edge of the Auyán-tepui mountain in the Canaima National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The height figure mostly consists of the main plunge but also includes about 400 metres of sloped cascade and
rapids below the drop and then a 30-metre-high plunge downstream of these talus rapids. There are many views on who was the first European to discover the falls from the British explorer Walter Raleigh in 1595
to Fernando de Berrío, a Spanish explorer and governor around the same time span as Raleigh. However, many believe that no western saw the falls until 1927 when the Spanish explorer Fèlix Cardona was
travelling through Venezuela.

The second largest waterfall is the Tugela Falls which have a height of 983 meters total drop, with the
longest single drop at 411 meters. It is located in Drakensberg (Dragon’s Mountains) of Royal Natal National Park in KwaZulu-Natal Province, Republic of South Africa. Its native name is uThukela in
Zulu, and is a complex of seasonal waterfalls. According to some measurements, it is the world’s tallest waterfall. A revisited validation of waterfall measurements is not available and there is still uncertainty whether Tugela or Venezuela’s Angel Falls is the tallest as both measurements were taken at considerable distance fromthe two waterfalls.

Although they are the highest I think the best well known waterfall is the Niagara Falls. It is a group of three waterfalls at the southern end of Niagara Gorge, spanning the border between the province of Ontario in Canada and the state of New York in the United States. The largest of the three is Horseshoe Falls, which straddles the international border of the two countries. It is also known as the Canadian Falls. The smaller American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls lie within the United States. These falls are formed by the Niagara River,
which drains Lake Erie into Lake Ontario, the combined falls have the highest flow rate of any waterfall in North America that has a vertical drop of more than 50 meters, considerably less than Angel falls. During peak daytime tourist hours, more than 168,000 m3 (5.9 million cu ft) of water goes over the crest of the falls every minute.
Before the falls, there are violent and turbulent rapids. Further upstream, however, where the river’s current flows more gently, boats are able to navigate. Just before the Welland River empties into the Niagara, a pedestrian walkway spans the river. Posted on this bridge’s pylons is a warning sign for all boaters, it asks the question, Do you have an anchor? Followed by Do you know how to use it? For from this point there is danger of being caught in the fast moving water and so an anchor is essential.

Life in many ways is like this river, sometimes gently flowing but then suddenly it can rush and flow violently this way and that. It can even bring us over the precipice and we fall into the depths of sin and despair. That is why we too need an anchor, something that will hold us fast and secure. The book of Hebrews 6 verse 19 says, “Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast,… ” This anchor refers to the hope christians have in Jesus Christ. He stands for stability, security, and a steadfast connection to God’s presence amidst life’s storms, keeping believers firm and preventing spiritual drifting. Jesus is the ultimate stabilizer and guide in our life. If you wish to avoid a spiritual cataclysm, you need to put your Faith in
Jesus to keep your life sure and steadfast.
