Kathmandu/ A three-day news writing workshop aimed at sensitizing students with story pitching, reporting, ethical use of AI tools in writing, and an introduction to investigative journalism wrapped up today. “What is more effective than hands-on experience? The writing workshop-2026, conducted for the students of St. Xavier’s College and guest students, offers practical insights into the craft of journalism”. said Fr. Dr. Augustine Thomas S.J., the Principal. “It marks yet another step toward maturing in reporting and writing facts clearly and responsibly,” he added.
“The more we read, the better we write. Reading not only expands knowledge— it trains the mind to recognize structure, flow, and build vocabulary. It shapes a writer’s instinct for detail and helps journalists understand how context gives meaning to facts,” said Kunda Dixit, adjunct Professor at New York University, Abu Dhabi, and Publisher of Nepali Times, highlighting that strong reading is essential for journalism practice with depth and integrity.
“Despite the dominance of AI-assisted journalism practice, writing lies at the heart of communication. To prepare the students ready for changing the media ecosystem and equip them with required skills and knowledge, we have been hosting this workshop since 2021,” said, Chun Bahadur Gurung, Faculty Lead of Faculty of Journalism, adding, “This has become more productive for the students, who now are working at various fields of mass communication including Nepal’s leading media outlets,”.
Accredited by the University Grants Commission (UGC), Nepal (2024), the college continued to reaffirm its commitment to excellence in education, leadership, and service by providing students with hands-on learning opportunities to learn directly from leading figures of Nepal’s media landscape.
The workshop featured hands-on exercises and open discussions, allowing participant students to actively engage with real newsroom scenarios and receive direct feedback from experienced professionals. Sonia Awale, editor of Nepal Times, Rajneesh Bhandari of Nepal Multimedia Investigative Journalism Network (NIMJN), Prabesh Subedi, among others, facilitated the workshop.
A total of 32 students from St. Xavier’s as well as various community colleges from the Kathmandu Valley also participated in the three-day workshop. This annual workshop was organized in collaboration with the Nepal Multimedia Investigative Journalism Network (NIMJN).
