In society today knowing the time is as simple as looking at the phone or wristwatch and seeing an accurate display of the time. Time is something that has been in the world since its beginning. The sun and the moon give the 24-hour clock of day and night, the waxing and waning of the moon gives the various months. The cold season gives the winter and the warm season the summertime, the rainy season and the dry season, along with the seed time and the harvest time all inform people and their lives showing them that they have been ordered by the time. In the English speaking world we have the saying ‘time is gold’. Just as gold is precious so is time therefore you should use it wisely. A story is told of a lazy man who was also a friend of a king. One morning, the lazy man asked the king “why does everyone say that I can’t do anything? Even when I go to get a proper job, everyone refuses me. It is because my enemies have spoken against me and have warned everyone that I never do the work on time. But im not like that I can do a days work. ” The King replied to his friend, “Let’s make a deal, that before sunset today you come to my treasury and collect as much gold and pearls as you can, and they will all be yours, you could be a wealthy man.” The excited man rushed home to his wife and explained everything the King had said to him. Upon hearing her husband the wife said, “Go and get the gold and gems now. Time is gold for you.” However, the lazy man sat down and said, “Oh, I can’t go now it’s lunch time, give me lunch first.” So the wife gave him his lunch. After having lunch, he decided he was very tired and needed to take a short nap, but instead of sleeping just a little while he slept for 2 hours. Then, late in the afternoon he decided it was time to go so he picked a few bags and went towards the king’s treasury. On the way, he felt very hot it was too hot a day to go walking he thought. So, he sat down under a tree to rest and cool down and ended up sleeping for another 5 hours! When he awoke, he started to rush to the palace it was already late in the evening and the sun was setting fast. When he arrived to his dismay he found that the palace gates had been shut before he could reach them. The lazy man had lost the golden chance to get rich just because, he didn’t know the value of the time. The importance of time was understood by our ancient fathers and they created the sundial, water clocks and the candle clocks to give them an idea of the time. Today, time is even more important. Or is it the correct use of our time that is important! The lazy man was foolish he didn’t use the time he had been given to gain great wealth. The apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians chapter 7 verse 29 tells us that time is short. Then in 2 Corinthians chapter 6 verse 2 he tells us that ‘now is the accepted time behold now is the day of salvation’. Men can be like the lazy man and not take advantage of the golden time to prepare for meeting the living God. He says that today is the day of preparation. Don’t leave it until tomorrow because tomorrow could be too late.
